Why would anyone want ducks? They are messy, noisy, and, well, very cute, that's why. These ornamental ducks are fun to watch and don't take up too much space. They do fly very well though, so an enclosure is neccessary to keep them in and predators out. I've found ducks to be quite charming and nothing is quite as much fun to watch as ducks splashing around in their freshly filled ponds.
A caution though, to anyone considering ducks, they are very, very messy birds. They like things wet and mucky, and use their water to mix their food in, so be prepared to change water frequently. They attract flies as well and the girls, the ones who lay the eggs of course, are the truly noisy ones. Girls are called Ducks, and males are called Drakes, which can make for a lot of confusion when talking with someone who doesn't know this. In a conversation with my husband I was going over what I had in the way of ducks and said I had more Drakes than Ducks, that I had a Kaki Campbell Duck and a Drake, a Magpie Duck and two Drakes, a Pekin Duck, etc. He was giving me a strange look so I said "What?!" He said aren't they all ducks? Well of course they are but... So I had to explain the terminology, he just laughed. Okay, so I made a funny without meaning too.
We have decided to focus on ornamental ducks.
We are constantly working on this site. Some photos are of our own ducks, others are drawings curtesy of Diane Jackey. We are in the process of breeding our birds but don't have anything available right now. If you interested in ducks you can check out www.roosterscoop.com. For more information on any of the birds listed here, click on the name.
The ALBC is The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. They monitor the status of endangered livestock breeds.
Black East Indies
A truly beautiful duck with green irridescents in their black plumage. Small and cute and not nearly as messy as the larger duck breeds. I just love these ducks.
Mandarin Duck
These are non-domestic ducks, not native to the U.S. so no permit is required. They do not quack, but rather make a soft honking sound, very pleasant to listen to. They do fly so you either must keep their wings clipped or keep them in an aviary if you don't want them flying off. My favorite of the small ducks.
